How to Choose the Right Greek Sorority or Fraternity for College Women
Submitted by fabgirl20
Greek life on campus can be quite an experience. Students who are members of one of any Pan-Helenic fraternities or sororities enjoy a status and friendships envied by many other students. Many girls are overwhelmed at the large selection of college student organizations available to join. It gets a little more conflicting when trying to decide whether to join a greek sorority or another campus organization. You might be contemplating joining one of several established sororities but really don't know where to begin. Its important though to remember that some sororities are more prestigous and beneficial to you than others. Longer running sororities have a much richer history, and many famous and established members in society. This is one important factor many college women consider open rush season.
What is Open Sorority Rush?
Sorority rush is an open recruitment period where few group meetings are held at campus sorority houses to meet potential recruits. Some sororities focus on education and leadership and stress only having members that fit their ideals and share those goals, but others might focus on having members who will promote their goals of community involvement and social life.
There are a lot of great sororities out there but one that has been highly esteemed throughout history is Gamma Phi Beta. This is a sorority that has more than 160,000 members that are made up of 119 chapters and 171 alumnae groups. This sorority focuses on values such as:
1. Long term planning
2. Moral and ethical integrity
3. Communication
4. A tradition in excellence
5. Long term involvement in the sorority
6. Leadership
7. Active participation
8. Sisterhood
9. Academic excellence
Another highly esteemed Greek society is Kappa Kappa Gamma. This sorority, also known as a women's fraternity, was founded in Monmouth College in Illinois in 1869. This is one of the oldest Greek-letter societies that is still around today. This women's fraternity has chapters in the US as well as Canada and has chapters at 136 different institutions and more than 300 alumnae associations. The focuses of this fraternity include:
1. Friendship
2. Support
3. Opportunities for self growth
4. Intellectual development
5. Positive ethical principals
Another women's fraternity to consider when looking into organizations is Kappa Alpha Theta. This organization is found in the US and Canada and has more than 125 college chapters and about 200 alumnae chapters with more than 210,000 initiated members. This fraternity focuses on:
1. Academic excellence
2. Leadership development
3. Philanthropy
As you can see, there are a lot of options for you to consider when it comes to joining a sorority or fraternity. Look at all of the options at your university of choice and see which best fits who you are. Don't be afraid to ask for more information or get to know some of the women who are involved to see if it is really the right place for you.
