How Some High School Counselors Could Give Discouraging Advice to Students
Submitted by superwoman
High school counselors can be a great support system in high school for everything from personal to professional issues. But over the years I have heard some really sad stories from students I have worked with about what their high school counselor told them. Now we all know that not everyone is a straight A student. Straight A students usually are given the stars and the moon in school but what happens to the C and D students that struggle through?
Some students have told me that their counselors assured them that they would amount to nothing and they should not bother applying for universities and colleges. HHHmmmm. What's wrong with this picture?
High school counselors are there to build you up and to help you....not to break you down! Everyone should have the opportunity to experience higher education no matter what your economic, social, cultural, religious or ethnic background. And if a counselor is saying things like that they should not be counselors or be working with children.
Also, not all straight A students make out of mediocracy. A true talent is someone who can take their knowledge and adversity and turn it into their dream and passion where they do not have to answer to a boss but themselves.
I encourage you to follow your dream and passion (as long as it does not harm others...including yourself). The key is to also always think positive and be grateful that you have the ability to achieve things others tell you are impossible.
A list of some famous people that either never graduated from high school, never graduated from college or never went to college can be found at http://www.pennylicious.com. That list includes Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Sheldon Adelson, Paul Allen, Roman Abramovich, Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, Richard Bransen and several others all who by the way are multi-billionaires.
