Jennifer Lyon, alum of "Survivor: Palau" in 2005, died at 37 from her struggle with breast cancer. She passed away at her home in Oregon on Tuesday according to PEOPLE.
Jennifer got the diagnostic of the stage-three breast cancer a few months after the "Survivor: Palau" series ended. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy, with subsequent chemotherapy and tamoxifen, the drug taken to stop the recurence of the cancer.
"In the summer of 2004, I felt something in my right breast that didn't feel normal," according to a statement from Lyon to PEOPLE magazine in October 2005. "I thought it was probably scar tissue related to my breast implants. So I let it go -- for a long time."
She said 'Survivor' boosted her spirits and gave her enormous inner strength. She also told PEOPLE, " 'Survivor' taught me there's an end in sight."
Jeff Probst, longtime Survivor host said, "If I learned anything from Jenn it is this: Don't be afraid to ask someone how they are truly feeling about dying.". "Don't shy away from the scary parts of death. They need someone to talk to about what is going on inside their head. Most importantly, encourage them to let go of the expectations of others and give them permission to do what is right for them, even if it means letting go"
Throughout her breast cancer ordeal, Jennifer Lyon hosted many fundraisers for breast cancer research and awareness.
