Biography and profile
Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born February 20, 1988), better known as Rihanna, is a Barbadian-American recording artist and model. Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna is the eldest of three children.
She moved to the United States at age 15, where she was discovered and initially guided by record producer Evan Rogers. She subsequently signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings after auditioning for then-label head Sean Carter better known as Jay-Z.
The eldest of three children, Rihanna attended the prestigious Combermere School, where she founded musical trio and won the Miss Combermere Pageant.
In 2005, Rihanna released her debut album, "Music of the Sun", which blended Caribbean rhythms with hip-hop/pop lyrics.
That album produced her first hit single, "Pon de Replay," and went platinum with nearly 2 million copies sold worldwide. Less than a year later, Rihanna released "A Girl Like Me".
Her second album included number one single, "SOS". This hit landed her an endorsement deal with Nike footwear. The second single, a heartfelt ballad called "Unfaithful," became her third top ten hit. In 2006, Rihanna won the Teen Choice Award for Female Breakout Artist.
In 2007, Rihanna released Good Girl Gone Bad, her third album, featuring the smash hit single "Umbrella" with Jay-Z. The album was re-released in 2008 as "Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded", and featured the number one singles "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia."
Rihanna has achieved five Hot 100 number one singles, becoming the first of two female artists with the most number ones achieved since the year 2000.
Her personal life took a turn for the worst and sparked a media frenzy in February 2009, after she was allegedly assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. Brown pled guilty to one count of felony assault in June of the same year, and was sentenced to five years' probation and 180 days of community service.
In November 2009, Rihanna granted the first revealing interview to 20/20's Diane Sawyer, with vivid and graphic details about the assault incident.
Rihanna launched "Rated R" her fourth studio album in November 2009. The album has not generated any hit singles or record sales as her previous albums have, but her personal life continues to generate enormous media buzz following her 20/20 interview.
Rihanna also currently serves as one of Barbados' honorary cultural ambassadors.
