Three years ago, In 2007 two Tufts University students and one Boston College student were among a group of smart and driven young entrepreneurs at the Tufts Energy Forum (formerly the Energy Security Initiative) at Tufts. Their purpose there was to hear discussions and debates about the changing global energy industry. It was there that Jesse Gossett, Jared Rodriguez, Jayson Uppal, and Chris Jacobs decided there was a need for consultants to offer services that would help guide towns, cities, and private businesses in the direction of using renewable energies and better eco-friendly practices.
The young men did a lot of research in their final year of college and decided to launch a business to fill the need of renewable energy consultants; thus the company Emergent was born. They got their first consulting gig right before leaving college and today has over thirty clients, including the municipalities of Yates, Shelby, and Orleans County in western New York state. Emergent generated $108,000 in revenue in 2008, and has a $250,000 revenue projection in 2009. The company now expects to become profitable in 2011.
